One-Day Tryouts: The Easiest Way to Get Started, Anywhere

On Saturday August 23, 2025 and Saturday September 06, 2025, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) Police Department is conducting testing for its next class of entry-level recruits interested in a career in law enforcement. Testing will be conducted at MTA Police Headquarters located at 4701 Mt. Hope Drive in Baltimore starting at 8:00 a.m. Potential applicants arriving late will not be admitted.

Interested candidates should bring a government-issued photo I.D., wear athletic attire, and should allow approximately six hours to complete the written and physical agility tests, complete an oral interview and a preliminary background screening.

To qualify, you must be a U.S. citizen, have at least a high school diploma or GED, have a valid driver’s license, must be 21 years old prior to graduation from the police academy and must not have committed or been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor. Previous applicants should wait at least six months before reapplying.

To get started on your new career (or your lateral move) with MTA Police, fill out the Employment Application completely, then bring it with you for your One-Day Tryout session, typically held twice each month. Bring your driver’s license and wear athletic clothing – you’ll be challenged with a variety of tests of your mental ability and physical agility. If you pass the tests, you’ll have the opportunity to join the best; the MTA Police.

Applicants accepted as an Entry Level Police Officer (Grade 080) earn a salary of $59,346 ($28.53 hourly). Once graduated from the academy, officer will progress to a salary of $72,829 (Grade 081, Step 1). Twelve months after the academy graduation anniversary date, the officer progresses to a salary of $77,922 (Grade 082, Step1).

Lateral Officers are designated with Entry Grade 082, on corresponding wage salary with credit for up to nine years of service, $77,922 to $104,554, Steps 1 to 9 of the DNR salary scale.

Certified Officers’ Entry Grade is 082, on corresponding wage salary with credit for up to five years of service, $77,922 to $94,719 Steps 1 to 5 of the DNR salary scale. All grades and salaries are based on the CBA, DNR salary scale FY 7/1/2025.
