Historical rail building

As part of MDOT MTA’s responsibility to consider historic and cultural resources in our actions, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), the Maryland Department of Transportation - Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA), the State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA), the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), are developing a statewide Programmatic Agreement (PA) that will delegate certain review responsibilities to MDOT MTA and expedite review of minor projects that have no impact to historic properties.

FTA and MDOT MTA is seeking input from the public regarding this PA as a part of compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, a process that requires all federally funded projects (including many MDOT MTA projects) to take into account effects on historic properties such as historic buildings, districts, and archaeological sites. The PA will be a tool to reduce review times and process for projects not involving historic properties, or that would not affect historic properties. Projects that do have such potential would still follow the full review process.

If you would like more information or would like to provide input about the Programmatic Agreement development, please contact Lauren Molesworth at LMolesworth@mdot.maryland.gov or 410-767-7272.
