There will be a schedule change on the Penn Line effective Monday, September 23.  Amtrak trackwork will continue in the area of Martin State Airport, north of Baltimore. Additional time remains in the schedule for trains traveling north of Baltimore, to compensate for reduced speeds which ensures Amtrak trackworker safety. All trains are subject to 5-10 minute delays between Baltimore and Edgewood.

Carefully review the schedule to identify changes to the trains you ride. Specific details about changes are listed below, as well as some "Frequently Asked Questions" about the new schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there another schedule change?  We just changed schedules on August 5!

Amtrak Acela and Regional schedules will change, which requires MARC to change our schedules.  In addition, Amtrak notified MARC that Amtrak 151 (which honors MARC weekly and monthly passes) will no longer stop at Perryville, Aberdeen, or Edgewood. This train will be replaced by Amtrak 111, departing Perryville at 7:37am. Due to Amtrak’s elimination of Train 151 as a cross-honor train, adjustments have been made to morning southbound service to accommodate MARC customers who currently ride Amtrak 151 and need to arrive in Washington before 8:30am.

How long will this schedule be in effect?

Amtrak trackwork is scheduled to be completed in mid-November.  There will be another schedule change at that time to reflect the end of all Penn Line Amtrak trackwork for 2019.

I currently ride Amtrak 151 and Amtrak 111 doesn't get me to work before 9:00am.  What are my options?

  • Train 511 (5:45am departure from Perryville) will no longer stop at West Baltimore, Halethorpe or BWI, speeding the trip to Washington by 10 minutes.  It will arrive in Washington at 7:23am.
  • Train 517 (currently the 6:25am departure from Perryville) will depart Perryville at 6:35am and stop at all stations through and including Martin Airport 10 minutes later. It will then depart Baltimore and all scheduled stops to Washington 5 minutes later. The later departure will close the gap as much as possible between MARC 517 and the former 6:55am departure of Amtrak 151.  Train 517 will arrive in Washington at 8:20am, which is two minutes later than Amtrak 151's current arrival.

Why is Train 511 no longer stopping at West Baltimore, Halethorpe or BWI Airport?

In order to provide faster travel times for passengers traveling longer distances from stops north of Baltimore, Train 511 will operate non-stop from Baltimore to Odenton.  Train 413 (currently the 6:45am departure from Baltimore) will depart all stations 5 minutes earlier to compensate for Train 511 dropping the three stops. Train 413 is one of the most lightly-patronized rush hour trains and it can accept additional passengers at West Baltimore, Halethorpe and BWI.  Train 413 will arrive in Washington at 7:43am, only ten minutes later than Train 511 currently arrives.

Am I reading the schedule correctly or do I need new glasses - is Train 536 restoring its stop at Martin Airport?

You can save a trip to the optometrist...yes, it is.  In response to numerous customer requests, the Martin Airport stop has been restored to Train 536.  We recognize that this was a significant inconvenience and thank our Martin State Airport passengers for your patience during the Amtrak trackwork.  We have also made an adjustment to the schedule of morning Train 613 (currently the 5:35am departure from Martin Airport) and it will now operate through to Washington as Train 409, providing a one-seat ride south of Baltimore for Martin Airport passengers.

Why is Train 536 no longer stopping at West Baltimore?

In order to restore the Martin State Airport stop while the Amtrak trackwork continues north of Baltimore, Train 536 has to drop West Baltimore to maintain its schedule and stay ahead of the Amtrak Acela all the way to Perryville. Train 438 will now stop at West Baltimore, which maintains a 5:00pm-hour express/limited stop train from Washington to West Baltimore.
