FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
New American-Built MTA Hybrid Electric Buses Allow for Transport of E-Bikes to Enhance Options for Cyclists
BALTIMORE, MD (May 11, 2026) – In a continued commitment to sustainability, public health and multimodal transportation, the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration proudly supports Bike to Work Week, May 11-17. Today, Maryland Transportation Secretary Katie Thomson and MTA Administrator Holly Arnold joined Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, city leaders and cycling advocates on a bike ride through Baltimore City. The group ride showed how public transportation and biking can work together to reduce carbon emissions, ease traffic congestion and promote physical well-being.
“Thousands of Marylanders bike or take transit every day to get to work, school and life’s opportunities,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Katie Thomson. “The Maryland Department of Transportation is serious about the safety of all Marylanders, and is proud to make record investments in efforts that protect the lives of those who walk, bike and roll.”
“As primary ways Marylanders travel, biking and riding transit work together in getting people to their jobs, schools and opportunities,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Katie Thomson. “The Maryland Department of Transportation is Serious About Safety and we are making record investments to protect the lives of those who walk, bike and roll.”
The MTA will host a Bike to Work Week pit stop Thursday, May 14 from 7 to 9 a.m. at Baltimore Penn Station, featuring refreshments, giveaways and safety information for commuters.
“Public transit and cycling are natural partners in building a more connected, accessible and sustainable Baltimore,” said Maryland Transit Administrator Holly Arnold. “Working alongside city leaders, we are creating a transportation ecosystem where residents have flexible, affordable and environmentally sound options for getting to work and beyond.”
In recent years, the MTA has invested in bike-friendly infrastructure improvements to support first and last mile connections for riders. That tradition of improved service to our riders who cycle continues this year with the deployment of new American-built hybrid electric buses that feature extra-large bike racks built to carry both regular and E-bikes.
In addition to the new buses, the MTA has expanded the availability of bike racks on Light Rail, Metro Subway and MARC Train travel - making it easier for cyclists to use public transportation. Integrating bicycles with transit systems is becoming increasingly important as urban centers work to reduce carbon emissions and create more expansive transportation networks.
The Maryland Transit Administration is one of the largest multi-modal transit systems in the United States, and operates local and commuter buses, Light Rail, Metro Subway, MARC Train Service, and a comprehensive Mobility paratransit system. The goal of the Maryland Transit Administration is to provide safe, efficient, and reliable transit across Maryland with world-class customer service.
