FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Bicycling Provides First-Last Mile Connection to Transit
BALTIMORE, MD (May 16, 2025) – The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration is proud to continue its participation in Bike to Work Week, May 12-18. This annual event highlights how partnering cycling and public transportation promotes an eco-friendly environment while fostering better physical health and reduced street congestion. On Bike to Work Day, Friday, May 16, the agency will host a “pit stop” at Baltimore Penn Station from 7 a.m - 9 a.m.
“Bike to Work Week is a great opportunity to discover how biking and transit can work together for a seamless commute,” said Maryland Transit Administrator Holly Arnold. “Whether you’re a daily rider or trying it for the first time, we’re making sure our system is ready for you and your bike.”
Over the last several years, the agency has focused on making bike-friendly infrastructure improvements to support first and last mile connections. Bike racks have been installed at 29 sites connected to Light Rail, Metro Subway and MARC Train. The agency has also expanded the availability of bike racks on trains, creating more “bike cars” to accommodate the growing demand for bicycles on MARC trains.
In addition, all local buses are equipped with easily accessible bike racks on the front of the bus. These enhancements to support bicycling expand mobility options for all and creates a more integrated transportation network. While May is National Bike Month, combining biking and transit is a great, sustainable way to travel all year long.
The Maryland Transit Administration is one of the largest multi-modal transit systems in the United States, operating systems that include Local Bus, Commuter Bus, Light Rail, Metro Subway, MARC Train Service and a comprehensive Mobility paratransit network. Our goal is to provide safe, efficient, and reliable transit across Maryland with world-class customer service.
