MDOT MTA Celebrates ‘Bike to Work Day 2018’ on June 1

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cycling Enthusiasts Can Transport Full-Sized, Non-Collapsible Bicycles Seamlessly Between Local Bus, Light RailLink, Metro SubwayLink and MARC Train

BALTIMORE, MD (MAY 31, 2018) – The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) recognizes bicycling as an important transportation option to provide first- and last-mile connections to transit. As such, MDOT MTA will participate in various activities on “Bike to Work Day 2018” to support and thank riders who combine bicycling with taking public transportation.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate bicycling as a clean, fun and healthy way to get to work,” said MDOT MTA Administrator Kevin Quinn. “Our bicycle-riding customers now have more options than ever to transport their full-sized, non-collapsible bikes on MARC Train, Light RailLink, Metro SubwayLink and our BaltimoreLink buses.”

MDOT MTA will host a Bike to Work Day pit stop at Penn Station from 6-8 a.m. on Friday, June 1, 2018 to thank riders who bike to work daily. There will be a table in the central plaza with snacks, drinks, t-shirts and other goodies for riders who register at the Baltimore Metropolitan Council’s (BMC) Bike to Work Day website (http://www.baltometro.org/be-involved/transportation-options/bike/bike-to-work-day). MDOT MTA will have Bike-n-Ride displays at several Bike to Work Day locations around the Baltimore region. Bike-n-Ride displays help riders learn how to use the bike racks located on the front of all MDOT MTA BaltimoreLink buses. Bike racks allow users to combine bicycling and bus service to reach more destinations than are possible by bicycling alone.

MARC bike cars will run on five southbound and five northbound Penn Line trains and one eastbound and one westbound train on the Brunswick line from Frederick on June 1. The train numbers and scheduled times for departure at each station are listed below. MARC bike cars can hold up to 24 bicycles and 40 passengers. Later this year, MARC will introduce vertical bicycle racks on select MARC passenger cars and will continue adding those until the entire fleet has been equipped.

On May 18, MDOT MTA staff participated in Bike to Work Day activities on MARC Train’s Brunswick Line in Frederick. MDOT MTA also has worked with the Baltimore City Department of Transportation to install Baltimore Bike Share docks at MDOT MTA rail stations around downtown Baltimore, with bike share docks already at or adjacent to eight Metro SubwayLink, Light RailLink and/or MARC Train stations, including the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Shot Tower, Charles Center (both entrances), Lexington Market, Centre Street, Convention Center and Camden Light RailLink stops.

Most Light RailLink stops and Metro SubwayLink stations have bicycle racks, as well as many MARC Train stations. Racks are available at no cost. Bike lockers are also available throughout the MDOT MTA system at several Light RailLink stops, Metro SubwayLink stations and MARC Train stations. For locations where bike lockers are available and for information on renting a bicycle locker, call the MDOT MTA Office of Customer Information at 410-767-3999. A $25 deposit for the locker key is refundable. The yearly cost of renting a locker is $70.

MDOT MTA is one of the largest multi-modal transit systems in the United States. MDOT MTA operates LocalLink and commuter buses, Light RailLink, Metro SubwayLink, Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) Train service and a comprehensive Mobility (paratransit) system. MDOT MTA’s goal is to provide safe, efficient and reliable transit across Maryland with world-class customer service.
